MISSION STATEMENT

 
As the University’s in-house legal officers, the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel for Compliance Support advise the President, the Board of Trustees, the deans, and the administration on all legal matters pertaining to their responsibilities on behalf of the University. The Office of General Counsel is responsible for providing legal representation, preventative legal advice and review, and legal opinions on all substantive issues of law relating to the University’s exercise of its academic mission.

More specifically, the Office of General Counsel provides a wide variety of legal services, including:

•  Advice/facilitation/oversight on statutory/regulatory compliance issues and programs
•  Education and training of administrators, faculty, and staff on legal issues affecting the University’s programmatic goals
•  Representation of the University in litigation
•  Review and revision of University policies, procedures, and handbooks
•  Advice to official committees including faculty, staff, and those charged with student discipline and honor violations
•  Supervision of outside counsel retained to assist with matters requiring specialized legal expertise

The General Counsel reports to the Board of Trustees and the President.
