ACCOMMODATING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

An Overview for Students, Faculty, and Administrators

Students

Students wishing to request accommodations should identify themselves to the Dean designated in the accompanying university policy.  Students will need to complete a request form, obtain any necessary diagnostic evaluations, and provide documentation of a disability requiring accommodation.  Once an accommodation has been approved, students should notify the designated Dean if the accommodation is not provided.  Students need to submit written requests for accommodations at the start of each academic year, unless the designated Dean determines otherwise.  The designated Dean may require that students contact his/her office at the start of each academic term to provide course and faculty information for accommodations.

Designated Deans

Upon student request for accommodation, the designated Dean will meet with the student to discuss the request and the documentation needed to evaluate the request.  The Dean should provide the student with W&L's accommodation policy and procedures, a short Question and Answer overview of the university's responsibilities to students with disabilities, and documentation guidelines to assist the student's diagnosing/treating professional.  The Dean evaluates and maintains all disability records.  The Dean determines eligibility for accommodations and specifies approved accommodations to faculty and necessary staff, consulting, as he/she deems necessary with other professionals, including faculty.  The Dean is available to faculty and staff for consultation on implementing approved accommodations and course/program planning to provide access to students with disabilities.

Faculty/Staff

Faculty/Staff members provide disability accommodations approved by the designated Dean, upon receipt of a letter from the Dean.  Faculty/Staff members receiving an unapproved request for disability accommodation should refer the student to the designated Dean.  Faculty should see that each course is accessible to students with disabilities, including technology used in the course.

Provost

The Provost or designee resolves conflicts in the provision of accommodations, or their denial, that the student cannot resolve with the designated Dean.
